  Temple of Universal Peace
 

Brief / profile
With an area of 23,000 square meters, the Temple of Universal Peace is one of the most impressive temples among the Eight Outer Temples in Chengde. Also enjoying the reputation of the Big Buddha Temple, it provides a reference to the large wooden statue- Guanyin the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy.

Location
This temple lies outside of the walls of the Chengde Mountain Resort in the northeast of Chengde City.

Why got its this name
Function or value in the past
It was built in order to commemorate Qing Government’s defeat of Mongolian army.

Construction

The Temple of Universal Peace just like many others in Chengde combines the Tibetan and Han styles. There’re many halls inside including the Gate Hall, a Stele Pavilion, the Hall of Heavenly Kings, the Bell and Drum Towers and the Mahavira Hall. The center of the temple consists of several halls. Smaller halls are surrounding the main hall, which stands for the structure of the universe.
The Mayana Hall with the height of 36.75 meters is the most popular hall among visitors. Inside the hall stands a tall statue called the Goddess of Mercy which is 22.3 meters tall and weighs nearly 110 tons. The fingers on the statue’s 42 arms have a 1.2-meter-tall image symbolizing Guanyin’s teacher Amitabha. This statue has 1,000 heads and 1,000 arms, which means Guanyin has the ability to see the past, present and the future. This statue is said to be the largest wooden statue in the world. Besides, there’re also smaller statues, paintings and inscriptions in other halls.

History

This temple was first constructed in 1755 during the reign of the Emperor Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty.

Present condition
It’s said that the current statue is a copy of the original one. At present, the local government and religious organizations allocated funds to restore the Buddha statue in this temple.

Transportation.

Tourists can take bus No.6 from the downtown area to get there. In addition, you can also go there by taxi or bicycle.

Admission fee

The admission fee for this temple is RMB 50 during the high seasons and RMB 40 in the low seasons.
